We need more children raised in a household with a loving father to a loving mother and children. God teaches that and because our country is turning its back on that principle we see the consequences all around us.
There is a subtlety that is being missed here. The answer is not black and white- more people vs no more/less people. It’s how many more and what variety. By variety, I mean diversity- we need a diversity of race and religion of course, but also a diversity of thinking, philosophy, life experience.
Just one comment. For all of those who believe in population control, let them be the first to lead by example. Maybe, just maybe it is them who are the ones who should volunteer their lives to depopulate the planet. Once I see that, then I will listen to what they have to say.
Population "control" can be as simple as maintaining birth rate. Show me one person who even thinks of "depopulation" as a means to population control. There are many of us who have chosen to not have kids and adopt instead.
Jenn, I am in agreement with you on adoption. In fact, I find it quite admirable. However, I believe you are missing the point. There are many environmental and atheist activists who are dedicated to depopulation through genocide an unfortunately they are gaining in control on a global scale. If you haven't noticed, you haven't been listening. Just remember one thing. "Saving humanity" and "saving the planet" are two very distinct and separate concepts. If one simply follows the Judeo-Christian principles handed down to us from above, there will be no need for the latter.
I've agreed with Marc pretty much on everything up until now, but on this one subject I think he is guilty of the same insular and hopelessly naive outlook that many Americans subscribe to. Americans living in sanitized American communities need to go live in the over-crowded slums of developing nations for about six months and experience first-hand what over-population and over-crowding do to your quality of life. Lack of food, water, electricity coupled with endemic disease and rampant crime create a kind of cutthroat competition for resources the likes of which you cannot conceive until you live it. Madrasas in the Middle East leverage the hopelessness of young men without jobs to recruit them into terrorism.
Over-population dilutes the effect of infrastructure and technology advancements. It takes significantly more effort to better the life of the common man in countries such as India and China than in countries such as Sweden or the US.
On a separate note: In an egalitarian society, women cannot be treated like baby-making vessels. Having less babies helps them focus better on the fewer children they have, and improves everyone's quality of life. Women all over the world have spoken: wherever you see the level of education rise amongst women, you see a lower birth-rate. Having babies is no longer the defining criterion of women's lives. And that's a good thing.
Rather than produce more kids, we should be adopting more kids. More immigration, not more kids, is the answer.
Re: Americans living in sanitized American communities need to go live in the over-crowded slums of developing nations for about six months and experience first-hand what over-population and over-crowding do to your quality of life.
- Good point. Requiring ALL AMERICANS to serve in the peace corp and/or US military could help fulfill that goal. BUT I want the US military and the US Peace Corp to have BILLIONS of people in it when it goes into countries with only millions of people. ...We can't fix all of other people's problems, but with more resources, we can sometimes help tip the scales.... Please join me in that goal.
Re: It takes significantly more effort to better the life of the common man in countries such as India and China than in countries such as Sweden or the US.
- I don't know enough about Sweden. During WWII and WWIII (versus the Soviet system), the Swedes seemed relatively happy with the US. Some might argue that in raising children, the US now might be able to learn from Sweden (which is part of the value of a system of relatively free independent republics working together).
As to your larger point, of how much effort it takes to better the life of the common man, even with numbers, it's hard to quantify this. Is the "common man" African-American? Latino? White but raised by only one parent?
Regardless, raising kids in a society with freedom of speech, voting rights, and the right to bear arms (History proves this is NEEDED to allow physically weaker people or groups a better chance (not perfect but better) to enforce their rights to speak, vote and/or enjoy equal rights), IS WORTH DOING, and SETTING THE EXAMPLE FOR OTHER COUNTRIES TOO. Eg - I dare the Chinese government to give all of its people as many guns as the US has - and the right to bear arms as of 2022...Let's see how well that goes as compared to here in America.
Re: Having babies is no longer the defining criterion of women's lives. And that's a good thing.
- YES no person should be defined by any one criterion. BUT both men AND women should accept that Kids Matter. Raising Good Kids Matters. Instead of putting too much faith in guns, AI, or other technology, even Elon Musk admits that PEOPLE MATTER. If you believe that people matter more than things, start to consider making people and/or making people better.
Re your last points, adoption is great. If that's what you can do, go do it. If you can only be a foster parent - but not be abusive, demeaning, or cruel - go do it. If you can produce and raise kids properly go do it. If you can only be a "Big Brother" or "Big Sister" or "Coach" 1x / day or 1x week, stop watching others on tv or online and go do it. If you can babysit or teach English and math to any child (immigrant or not) whose parents aren't as available as they should be, go do that. Even if you're an atheist, talk to a church or spiritual group and they may be able to help you help families. Of course: don't be a creep or pedophile and create worse problems. Be a teacher, coach, or mentor. Just play and be there for kids.
It's NOT an EITHER OR, it's BOTH OR ALL. Go 110% because we need more quality kids.
I literally just finished watching a news piece about the MILLIONS of Americans that cannot get enough food, let alone the rest of the world. We have so many people trying to come into the US that we won’t allow and far too many of the American’s already hate when they get here. We have millions and millions of people who think it is more important to prove that nobody can tell them what to do than to get a vaccine to save the lives of their fellow Americans. Racism, sexism, domestic violence, healthcare etc. are certainly better but this has only just begun to really improve significantly and America is actually significantly behind the rest of the first world in there areas.
I think we have an amazing potential to add more Americans to the workforce and therefore the economy without adding more people to an I’ll prepared country and planet for the ones already here. To call for an increase in such a simplistic and grossly irresponsible way has prompted me to post a response for the first time here. I have followed this site for many years looking for useful information, this is not at all useful, and if this is what is going to be available I will be unsubscribing shortly.
@JSP you're may never read this, but others have liked your comment.
RE: MILLIONS of Americans that cannot get enough food, let alone the rest of the world...
[and]...To call for an increase in such a simplistic and grossly irresponsible way...
There are books written on details that Marc couldn't easily include here. Stop watching the news and contact a church, food donation site, or non-profit as to how you can make things better for someone in need. If you are too sick, tired, old, or occupied to do this, imagine if we had a huge team of people who could and did do this... And imagine if we started sending some of our people into space in search of even more resources... We need to start visualizing the good that people can do (not just the "news" which sells best when it's alarmingly bad...).
Ok, I agree with the most part, but regarding the Wall that fell, well you forgot about brave Polish people who fought and shed blood for freedom, who fought with totalitarism and communism and started Solidarnosc movement and that was the begininnig of the end when finally the Wall fell. I lived there, and remember how it was in Poland back then. And as much as I love America, and agree it’s a great country, great nation to which I also belong, please do not forget others, and other nations who might not be as large in numbers but also brave and proud.
Agnes, you are correct! The brave Poles (and Czechs, East Germans, Romanians, and not's let forget the brave Russians who fought from inside the system) defeated Communism from the inside. Thank you for reminding me!
Yes and Pink Floyd did its part too! Or maybe Roger Waters deserves most of the credit :) Arguably, one of the great things about "The Wall" is that it's a classic album and movie that generates discussion of important history lessons. ...Again, Marc, thanks for your articles on the importance of growing our population. While perhaps JSP unsubcribed, I (and I'll bet others) joined.
I've never been through war. But I've Uncles who have. If I could raise more kids and avoid more wars -- and help those kids avoid wars, that would be so much better than shooting at people and getting shot at...
And, so long as Americans can avoid individual / corporate / government totalitarianism we have a chance to improve world peace and prosperity. Just that we have to admit, if we can't agree on a benevolent dictatorship (eg such as in China, Singapore, etc) then we will have the friction and dissension of competing forces in democracy (republicans vs democrats; male vs female; minority vs majority; rich vs poor; manager vs worker etc).
The challenge is to make game fair enough that everyone wants to still play by the rules, AND agrees to keep playing even as they redefine the rules.
Remember how the Canadian immigration website crashed when Trump was elected? That and the January Riots were low moments in America's history. They represent fear of extremism, and then actual extremist inciting people to try to break rules to take over America. Watch the play Hamilton and read the Federalist papers. Even though Hamilton wanted a strong executive wing, several Constitutional scholars have pointed out that Hamilton would NOT have supported the January riots.
Many of our Founding Fathers did things other leaders did not do... President Washington gracefully RETIRED even though he could have been re-elected (without riots). He also freed his slaves upon his death (though it was not required). These acts of grace (not required or compulsory acts) set important examples.
...We're NOT FAIR all the time, and NEVER PERFECT (eg - why did Washington have slaves in the first place?) but STRIVING for more fairness or to BE BETTER is part of the American Dream and part of the American way. We need to teach more kids that. We can. I've always believed that the world devalues humans TOO MUCH. Ironic that, as unfair as things our here, it seems that, due to our guns, grain belt, tech, government of checks and balances, and our population (if it grows) America has a better chance of valuing human rights than most other countries.
I feel passionate that Marc's right. The obstacle is the way. People are both the problem and the solution. Ironic, as imperfect as we are, its up to America, and Americans to try to make more people who are the solution people than the problem people. I hope we do.
Thanks Marc for a well written explanation and answer to those against ‘more children’. I read that for the first time in history (not sure if it is true) USA had a higher mortality rate than births.
If that is the case, all the factors you presented are very valid and our higher authorities should act from now to correct the imbalance.
I want to add, that it will be necessary to keep adding children, as you mentioned in previous article, but my concern is how are we educate them properly. The USA system is not providing the budget, human resources and support to the education. The war budget is the principal concern of our government with education relegated to lower level. In addition, if a good number of our children have the chance to graduate from high school, the next educational step is monumental regarding college opportunities.
If you are from the middle class or below, considering the cost of college these days, it will be impossible to pay for a graduate degree.
Then, adding more children but not providing an education for them is an strategy for disaster.
I am never surprised by the negativity of some of the population, and how some of the respondents are ignorant and self centered, We might as well do away with religion because it isn't tangible, kill off our injured or sickly population because they aren't able to contribute to our society and so on. This is where the atheists and the media in our population focus only on the negative value of life. Those individuals must have a sad life, I look forward to my niece being born shortly and the joy that it brings and re-affirms we will not be alone and reunites the family. I have seen so many elderly in nursing homes who didnt make that investment and they wish that they had but now the opportunity is lost, talk to them about new life in the world and how lonely they are now...I feel sorry for those of you who dont get it.
When I read your newsletter about the need for American population growth, I was very glad to see you take a stance and present some well thought out facts and reasoning about the need to continue to keep America strong. I also instantly knew you would get some major push back.
All I can say is - KEEP IT UP! As you say, facts are facts and are important to those who are based in reality and can make rational decisions. Unfortunately approx. 1/2 of the USA make up their own facts and tend to be louder than those with the truth & love of this great country.
That needs to change, and with brave voices like yours, we are heading in the right direction.
God bless you and God bless America! Best country in the history of the world - and still getting better ()just in a little funk right now….).
I agree with your assessment. I also believe we need to be producers again and that automation won't kill jobs. I would like to see manufacturing come back to America. We feed the world and we can produce various products competitively with our innovative spirit. Western civilization depends on America and we have earned that leadership place in the world because of our culture, spirit, and benevolence. Let's grow!
As an immigrant country, America should welcome more immigrants! Immigrants add vitality to America, more ideas! Elon Musk is an immigrant. Steve Jobs family was from Syria, I believe. Then, of course, there are the troublemaking immigrant families like the Trump and Murdoch scum. But, overall, immigration is wonderful. I suppose we should never worry about Malthus. Why worry about famine, disease and war?
Marc you are brave for putting your America first attitude out there. These days too many people are eager to jump on a train they don’t understand. Many have either grown up without the USSR and North Korea and the Middle East as a real threat…or they have forgotten. Schools do no favors in teaching the history that matters anymore as not to offend anyone. This country was founded on so many amazing new ideas and principles- did we do bad things along the way? Yes, but who didn’t? We learn. We have to learn and we have to remember so we can do better. And this country needs to get their sensitive heads out of their behinds before it’s too late. People will be singing a very different tune when they lose all these liberties they are so desperately fighting against. It’s incredibly ironic and just plain sad.
We should learn from China, Japan, and Germany. China had a strict “one child” policy and this created a national crisis of low growth. They are now scrambling to recover by allowing (encouraging, perhaps) 3 children and restricting vasectomies. Japanese culture steered towards a single child doted on by parents and grandparents. Japan also has a challenge of low growth and an aging workforce without sufficient young workers to fund to social support for aging elders. Germany is headed the same way. As the demographic mix shifts toward elders and fewer young people in a productive workforce, economic structures become more difficult or impossible to sustain.
There are millions of eager young men and women ready to go to Japan or Germany and contribute to the economy. The problem can be solved by relaxing immigration rules. But oh no, that solution is so repugnant to the citizens already in the country, right?
Agreed, we need to grow!....I've never been an over-population pundit....We have vertical farming technology....Our Earth can accommodate 500 billion people...we are at around 10 billion I believe.
We need more children raised in a household with a loving father to a loving mother and children. God teaches that and because our country is turning its back on that principle we see the consequences all around us.

Can you please share an example of the " many environmental and atheist activists who are dedicated to depopulation through genocide"?
The existence of a widespread global murder campaign is not believable, frankly.
